While the other dock workers focused on the bread, Kyle had the job of lifting three large barrels of wine aboard. Each one was humongous - about the weight of a small child - and he had to lift each one up the slippery, treacherous plank.
The first barrel was a tough ordeal - and Kyle had to muster all of his strength in order to manoeuvre it into position. The second one was tougher still - and Kyle almost slipped backwards when carrying it up the soggy, rotten plank - but he barely made it there. Then, the third and final barrel was the most arduous of the lot. Kyle gave out several desperate cries of agony - which were completely ignored by the other workers, who were simply relaxing on the harbour front, having finished their loading five minutes previously.
When Kyle finally dumped the final barrel onto the wooden floor of the galley, his legs gave way, and he could move no further. He was soon joined by one of his colleagues - who, having finished loading up the bread, wasn't even sweating.
"Here, take these," he smiled, handing Kyle three soft, fresh loaves of bread as a meagre reward for his efforts. "I appreciate the effort, so thanks."
