Those of you who are younger might have been spared from surfing the internet this way, but for the rest of us it was... quite an experience. I like to think of it as "hamster-powered internet", since it would work very nicely for a while, then become progressively slower as you used it and finally collapse right there and then. It wasn't exactly efficient, and coupling that with the fact that it had a saying on your phone bill while also blocking the phone from being used while you were online, it really led to a bunch of unpleasant results and no shortage of arguments with the parents.
I think my "favorite" memory of this comes from the time I tried to download the Shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D (5 MB - I really didn't know how to pirate back then) and it ended up taking more than an hour to download
I was stuck using this form of connection until 2006, when I finally hired broadband internet... and things were just a little better, as it was heavily unreliable.
What about you, though? Ever tried it? What memories do you have of it, fond or otherwise?
