Well... the British Grand Prix took place today, and the main incident took place on the very first lap. Championship rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were fighting for the lead - and then, the two of them collided:
Verstappen was eliminated on the spot. Hamilton was able to keep going, but he received a 10-second time penalty for causing the collision. Still, he was able to recover from that penalty - and, after passing race leader Charles Leclerc on the penultimate lap, Hamilton went on to win the race anyway.
There were those who felt that this crash was a racing incident, and there were those who felt that Hamilton got away lightly (and naturally, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner was furious). Myself, I was very surprised that the penalty was so lenient: I was expecting at least a drive-through penalty, which would have cost Hamilton quite a lot more than 10 seconds (so he wouldn't have won the race in the end). I can understand why people think it was a racing incident (in which case it shouldn't have been penalised at all) - but, either way, Verstappen was completely blameless here, and it sucks that he's lost yet another possible victory through no fault of his own .
This does narrow the Championship battle: Verstappen's lead has been cut from 32 points to 8 points. Perhaps that makes the battle more exciting, but the manner in which it happened leaves a sour taste in my mouth .
