Sometimes in sports, you'll get individuals or teams whose form can swing up or down pretty wildly. On their day, they can go toe to toe with the very best; however, there will be at least as many times when they're absolutely nowhere. This thread is an ode to those inconsistent performers: if you can think of any, then post them here .
I'll start out with Formula One's Pierre Gasly. He started out with Scuderia Toro Rosso (the Red Bull junior team) towards the end of 2017, then did a full season with them in 2018, before being promoted to the main Red Bull team in 2019. Sadly, he tended to be miles off the pace of team-mate Max Verstappen - and, embarrassingly, he got dropped back to the junior team in the middle of the season. He still races for that team today (under their new name of AlphaTauri) - but, unfortunately, he hasn't had a lot of good performances with them.
However, Gasly's few good performances have been absolutely great. In only the second race of the 2018 season, at the Bahrain Grand Prix, he made himself noticed by finishing in 4th place. Then, at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, after his demotion to Toro Rosso, he shocked everybody by finishing in 2nd. But his crowning glory came at the incident-packed 2020 Italian Grand Prix, where he somehow came through to win the race . Granted, he did need some luck to get into these high positions; however, when he got it, he was able to capitalise on it, which is certainly easier said than done. (I guess what it comes down to is: he's good at taking any opportunities that come his way, but he's not so good at creating these opportunities for himself )
Anyway, do you know any more?
