Due to, uh, global events I have been having a lot more free time on my hands and I decided to use some of it to dust off my badly-neglected Twitter account, which allowed me to get in touch with all sorts of cool, interesting characters... and queen among them was the one that gives this topic its title: my fellow gaming journalist, Chereside.
I could write a whole introductory bit explaining to you who she is, but a good interview bridges that gap by itself and that's exactly what happened here, so I'll let her do the talking from this point onward and I'm just going to note that I'm very thankful by the fact that she decided to share some of her --really quite limited-- time with us.
Without further ado, here's the interview!
Q: How would you introduce yourself to any potential new readers?
A: First of all, Thank you for this interview, I was really surprised, since I really do not consider myself in anyway someone worth interviewing.
My “gamer” name is Chereside, I’m 27 years old and I’m from Cordoba, Argentina. I’m a huge videogame, horror and anime fan…and maybe I should mention sharks here? Haha.
I studied Social Communication at the university and graduated in 2015. Since then, I’ve been going back and forward between different jobs. Last year I started working for Cultura Geek.
I’ve a passion for writing and being able to write about videogames as my job is kind of a dream came true.
Q: How did you end up working for Cultura Geek? Were you "discovered" or applied for the job?
A: A little bit of both! It all started when I met Okelfo, another writer. We became friends and started talking, eventually he asked me if I would like to apply for the job. I love writing and I really enjoy creating content. I wrote a note as a test and they liked my style, so they welcomed me to CG.
Q: Among all your published works for the site, which is the one you are the most proud of? Why?
A: That must be the Maneater Review. Never had SO much fun writing something. The thing I appreciate the most about CG is that they let me be myself. And I can make jokes while writing, and be extremely free in my style. I love sharks –I know it’s weird- and this game was one I really wanted to review.
Q: What's the most fun you have had as part of your job at CG?
A: It’s always fun. My work mates are great people and we always joke togheter. It really doesn’t feel like a job. Being able to also be a part of Cultura Geek TV is great too.
Q: I see that you stream on Twitch, is that independent of your job at CG? Which of your past streams should we check out? Which future ones should we look forward to?
A: I literally started streaming on August the 1rts. Just wanted to see if I could do it. Turned out I had a blast. I’ve got some serious self-confidence issues so it took me a lot to get the courage to stream. Turned out pretty nice. So…look forward to see me a lot more on twitch.
Q: Where did the shark thing come from? Did you watch "Sharknado" one too many times? Haha.
A: This actually has a serious answer, lol. I love parodies and humor. Always thought that the idea of making something extremely ridiculous sound serious was hilarious. That’s why I love Sharknado. It’s a comedy disguised as a ‘meant to be serious’ movie, and I find that really great. Also as the saga continues, it gets more and more ridiculous. That’s the kind of humor I enjoy.
Turns out that sharks have become the favourite plot for this ‘mockbuster’ films, and that’s why you have so many crazy shark movies.
As for how many times I’ve seen them…About six times each lol.
Q: Do you have any obscure movie recommendations of the sorts?
A: As in underrated? I really think Ghost Shark and Zombie Shark are masterpieces lol. They have less budget than Sharknado but nevertheless, are great. You have to understand this movies as what they really are: a dark comedy. If you intend to watch them as any other natural disaster movies, you won’t enjoy it for sure.
Q: Do you keep up with video games on your own time? If so, is there any new title that you are looking forward to?
A: I do love videogames but I’ve actually have a hard time buying hardware to play them…so now that I have an Xbox (lended by CG) and a decent –not gamer, but decent- PC, I’m keeping up with the oldies that I couldn’t play at the time.
As for new tittles… I guess we are all waiting for Cyberpunk 2077. And of course, the rest of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake –I’m actually waiting for this to go on Xbox because I haven’t been able to play the first part yet-.
Q: Any game/movie that you had tremendously high hopes for and ended up falling flat?
A: I do not get hyped easily. For me, the higher the expectations the bigger the disappointment. Perhaps the whole Harry Potter Saga from the third movie ahead. I didn’t expect anything and still got disappointed.
Q: What turned you into a "geek"? Was there any piece of media that got a strong reaction out of you when you were little?
A: What a question. It may seem contradictory but I do not consider myself a ‘geek’. I mean, not because I do not love ’geeky’ stuff, but cause I do not like labels. Specially due to that there are some people who think that you have to like certain things in a certain amount in order to be ‘geek’, and if not you qualify as ‘normie’ or ‘poser’…I find that terrible. I just like what I like and enjoy what I enjoy, not really trying to be a part of anything.
But…there are three sagas that turned me into…this. First of all, Sailor Moon was my first anime and I loved it so much I started looking for more and exploring different genders. Pokémon was definitely the second one, my cousin introduced me to the first videogame since I was already an anime fan…and just couldn’t stop playing ever since. And then, The Sims, that’s actually the first game I asked my parents to buy me and still spend hours playing it nowadays. Also there’s an honorable mention to Tomb Raider…My father loves games too, and one day he bought a pirate CD with some games on it, including a Demo of Tomb Raider. I must have watched my father play that videogame a hundred times, and played it myself a hundred more.
Moving further in time, I met the Final Fantasy Saga, that took my out of my confort RPG zone and encouraged me to explore new games and genres.
Q: Who would you say was your biggest inspiration in life?
A: This is a really hard question for me. I do not have ‘idols’ or ‘rol models’ I’m more like a ‘just do you’ kind of person. Of course I admire people, but I can’t really say ‘this person is the kind of person I dream of being’.
Anyone who follows their dreams and works hard to make them true is, for me, a source of inspiration.
FREE ROUND! Talk about whatever you want!
I feel really urged to make some hard shark propaganda here. But I’ll fight the urge. Well, once again thank you for this interview. I did not expect this at all. Also, I’d like to say to whoever Is trying to get themselves inside the ‘gaming journalism’ world, that even though it’s difficult, it’s not impossible. Careers in specialized journalism take a lot of time to take off (mine hasn’t, to be perfectly honest) but the most important thing to keep in mind is that you should always move forward no matter what. If a shark stops swimming, they drown. The only way to survive is keep on moving. Follow your dreams, take every opportunity, study and work hard.
So… I kinda did shark propaganda after all.
And that's it, folks! That was an interesting back-and-forth, wasn't it? I sure had a blast coming up with (and getting answers for) all those questions! And you can too, by following Chereside on Twitter, watching her play stuff on Twitch and/or directly shooting her questions on her very own CuriousCat page!
We at TCH would like to thank Chereside for the time provided and the answers given. You rule, girl!
