Title says all: this is a place to share any random or interesting photographs of historical value, that aren't worth their own thread .
To kick things off, I'll post this photo of Māori boy Hemi Pomara, taken in 1846. It's believed to be the oldest surviving photo of any Māori person:
(Source: National Library of Australia / The Guardian)
His story is a rather sad one . He originally lived on the Chatham Islands, about 500 miles to the east of New Zealand. However, the rest of his family was killed by a rival tribe - and then, he was captured by British traders, and sent to school in Australia. Subsequently, he was taken to London, where he was put on display as an example of a "native". He finally returned to New Zealand in early 1847, and it's not known what happened to him after that; however, I do hope it was happier than his childhood!
Do you have any thoughts on this photo - or any more historical photos that are worth sharing?
