Across the Western world, waffles are very popular as a dessert or a breakfast food. The Nordic countries are no exception to this; indeed, Swedes and Norwegians will celebrate "Våffeldagen" (or "Waffle Day") on 25th March each year. However, there are a couple of things that make their waffles different from the original Belgian variety. First of all, the waffle iron used in Scandinavia doesn't produce rectangular grid shapes: instead, it typically makes a ring of five or six small heart-shaped waffles. Secondly, the toppings are sometimes different too: they can use familiar toppings (like fruits and cream), but you'll also find them with savoury toppings, such as salmon or brunost ("brown cheese").
Personally, I've had these on some of my previous trips to Norway, and I quite enjoyed them. They did taste a fair bit different from the waffles I was used to from back at home: I'd say they were softer and chewier overall. I ended up having them quite a bit, because most cafés seemed to sell them: if you go to Scandinavia, then you won't have much trouble finding them .
Or, if you have a suitable waffle iron, you can make some of your own at home. Here's a video which explains a traditional Norwegian recipe:
So, has anyone else had these - and, if not, would you like them?
