Malaysia and Singapore are very close - both geographically and economically. But unfortunately, this means the main causeway between them is very congested: it can take 4 hours for what should be a 20-minute journey. Fortunately, there's a $3bn project underway called the "RTS Link", which should make this journey a lot quicker:
- The RTS Link will run between Johor Baru in Malaysia, and Woodlands in Singapore. This 4km journey will take around 6 minutes - and the line will be able to carry up to 10,000 passengers every hour.
- Both stations will have single-point immigration, with a joint customs system (so travellers will only need to be processed when they start the journey - not at both ends).
- Most of the track will be on above-ground viaducts (though a short portion on the Singapore side will be underground).
- The project is due to be completed in 2026. That's quite a long time, considering it was first proposed in 2010 - but, that means it'll still be done faster than HS2 .
There's quite a bit more in the video about the engineering behind this project (and how the viaducts are being built), for anyone who's interested in that. But otherwise, I hope this project achieves its aims of making travel between Malaysia and Singapore easier, to the benefit of both countries' economies !
