We often hear about how little money people have in less economically-developed countries - sometimes living off as little as £1 ($1.25) per day. But, how far does £1 per day really go in these places? In the above video, TheBurntChip travels to Karachi, Pakistan, in order to find out how far he could get with 400 rupees (around £1) per day:
- Street food and drink is very cheap. An iced beverage will cost 30 rupees, and a couple of snacks will cost 25 rupees. Or, a bigger meal (a chicken biryani) plus a drink cost only around 100 rupees. And better yet, he was able to get a cup of tea for free!
- Transport is much cheaper too. A ride in a tuk tuk costs 75 rupees (a little over 10p) - whereas a similar Uber journey in London would cost £8! Later on, he got a bus journey for only 10 rupees (about 2p) - although, the bus didn't say where it was going, so there are disadvantages .
- Then there's clothing. The guy managed to get a McDonald's cap for the equivalent of 15p (which, if my maths is correct, would be 60 rupees), and a pair of socks was 50 rupees.
- As for leisure activities... most of the ones they tried (such as a camel ride and a game of Carrom were free, though they did pay 25 rupees to see a snake charming performance.
- After all that, they had to eat again. The kebabs they got did put them slightly over their 400-rupee budget (they ended up spending the equivalent of £1.11 over the course of the day) - but still, it's impressive how much they bought .
- Then, the following day, they could have repeated their experiment... but instead, they spent 60,000 rupees (around £180) on a donkey!
I rather enjoyed watching this video: not only did it answer the question of how much you can buy in Pakistan with the equivalent of £1, but it also showed some stark cultural contrasts between the lives of the people living there, and the life I know in the UK. In particular, it doesn't feel like a very safe or hygienic environment to live in - but in a relatively poor country, I guess there's not a lot of money for things like that!
So, have you ever tried any budgeting challenges like this - even if you didn't have to travel halfway around the world to do them ?
