Or…Jerks are worse than Villains. Ever seen a character who’s more unlikeable than the main threat? That one you just hope to crucify on a burning cross-upside down and call worse than the villain despite the feats being less heinous.
I would cite Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye but there’s no villain in his story; Otherwise it would be perfect. Who else to cite…
Shou Tucker fits this thanks to forcibly fusing his wife, daughter, and pet with alchemy just to ensure he can keep his license. He manages to be far more hated than the Seven Deadly Sins(who are pretty charismatic) and the dictator King Bradley(who isn’t too nasty on a personal level.)
Also, Boscha and Odalia Blight too. Emperor Belos is technically realistic because ruthless dictators are real but they aren’t exactly a personal threat. By contrast, Boscha is basically three-eyed Regina George and nasty teenagers are something everyone had to deal with. Odalia is an emotionally abusive mother who is scary on a whole other level.
So…anyone got any more examples?
