Well, the games are over, and the Closing Ceremony is currently playing out.
In the end, Great Britain got another two gold medals, as cyclist Jason Kenny won the men's keirin, while boxer Lauren Price won the women's middleweight gold. That puts us on 65 medals overall, which matches our haul from London 2012 (although we got more gold that time: we won 29 golds in 2012, as opposed to 22 this year).
The final top 10 of the Tokyo medal table is as follows:
Congrats to Team USA on topping the medal table, in what was eventually a very close-run thing with China! Congrats also to the hosts, whose 3rd place matches best-ever placing from 1964 and 1968, and whose 27 gold medals is far and away their best ever. As for Great Britain, we may have fallen out of the top 3, but given how many of our top athletes from 2012 or 2016 are no longer competitive, I think our medal total held up better than expected: I was fully expecting us to fall back into the lower half of the top 10, battling with nations like France and Germany .
Anyway, I guess that's it for Tokyo 2020 - and now, on to Paris in 2024!
