Take almost everything you know of Native Americans and throw it out. The stereotypes are based loosely on Plains people due to them being the last to be conquered and the ones who appear in Western settings. Even then, there's still inaccuracies like the headbands which no nation ever wore in the Pre-Columbian era; Those were added to stop the wigs on white actors in redface from toppling off. Real Native Americans were a highly diverse group and had distinctive languages, religions, and cultural practices for each region. Tipis/Teepees were exclusively for Plains people while Totem poles were for Pacific Northwesterners. So forget the idea of a singular Native American culture. They also fought wars with each other and controlled their environment through methods like lighting the prairie on fire to hunt bison so ditch the hippy imagery and Noble Savage tropes too. Bad grammar? Look who's talking!
I'd like to formally apologize for perpetuating these stereotypes in Lord of the Rigs.
