ALL FOUR HOSTS MEDAL AS DIVISIONS IV-VII WRAP UP
With the last divisions of the undercard starting tomorrow, we saw a fine finish to some good hockey today. It is noteworthy that all four hosts medalled, with Mexico winning Division V, Ireland taking silver in Division VI, and the Netherlands and Aragon winning bronze in IV and VII respectively.
Division IV
Even if the Netherlands did take bronze, it wasn't the final match they really wanted - their tournament ended on a sour note as gold medal winners Poland routed them 6-0, with Andrzej Gwózdek scoring three of those goals. Zbyszko Wiśniewski frustrated even more regular NHLer Daniel Sprong with his play, something the Dutchman will have to worry about next season as the Polish starter is set to see action with the expansion Oklahoma City Tornadoes. So what's worse than being routed 6-0? Being routed 8-0, of course! Catalonia could just as easily have scored more, too, as they only put 24 shots on Zoltán-László Tőke. It was an absolute gong show.
The one non-rout on the day saw Serbia beat Ukraine in overtime, 4-3, as Nebojša Duraković made a nifty no-look pass to defender Lazar Novaković, who rifled it past Artur Ohandzhanyan for the game-winner. It wasn't enough for bronze, but Serbia can leave with their heads held high. It was noteworthy that Fedir Krynychnyy didn't see much playing time, perhaps as punishment by Oleksiy Zhytnyk for his participation in last game's line brawl. He still scored a goal, but it was Oleksiy Trakht that really shone in this game with two goals and an assist.
Speaking of which, the verdict on Danylo Tkachuk's line-brawl-causing blindside hit was as expected, as both the suspension and the fine were the maximum possible for a first-time offending player - ten games and ten thousand Euros. Artur Cholach was given a two-game suspension for his brief sleeper hold on Balázs Peter as well, with a stern warning that had he hung on for much longer it could easily have been much more, especially since Cholach is a repeat offender, having been suspended for a game last year for spearing. Ukraine and Romania were both also lectured on their frequently vicious play specifically against one another, as Ukraine-Romania matches have seemingly been marred by dirtiness in the last few years.

Georgia managed an unlikely bronze as they beat China in overtime, 6-5, and won it on goals for in the matches played between them, China, and the Afrikaners. It was a wild affair that saw both starting goalies - Sun Zehao and Kakha Ambrolava - pulled, and the final goal came just sixty-three seconds into overtime courtesy of hat-trick hero Nikita Bukia. Wales' silver-winning campaign ended rather anticlimactically, as Ben Ogden had a goal and four assists and Kevin Vaughan had a hatty in a 7-0 cruise over Iceland.
Mexico wrapped up its hosting campaign in style with a 4-1 win over the Afrikaners that saw them play well at both ends of the ice, with only Dylan Compton managing to beat Marcello de Antuñano. But there was an ugly incident where Aldus van Rooyen speared Luis Valencia early in the second period, resulting in a match penalty. This was really a turning point in the match as Mexico scored twice on the ensuing power play, already being up 1-0 at the time. Scott Stevens has said "at first glance" it looks like a three- or four- game suspension, van Rooyen's first.

Division VI
With promotion already set in place and relegation seeming like a foregone conclusion, it was just a matter of determining medals at this point. And the foregone conclusion was confirmed as hosts Ireland beat Turkey comfortably, 5-1, in Dun Laoghaire. Seán Coleman would end up in the joint goals lead after the Bulgaria game was finished; the Black Sea Bullies beat Northern Ireland 4-0 to wrap up their promotion and give Dimitrov a bit more confidence. By the end of the game, Mihail Bogdanovič and Daniel Dilkov were tied with Coleman for the goal-scoring title, although the overall points were shared by Mihail and older brother Nikolaj. The real to-watch game was the de facto bronze medal match between Utah and Castille, which the former won in overtime thanks to yet another Porter-Lewis combination play, 5-4 being the final score.
Regarding the Turkey-Northern Ireland incident from last gameday, Oğuz Karakoç has received a six-game suspension and a small fine for his high hit on Robbie O'Leary and his post-game comments about Ardal McGuire, and McGuire has been fined four hundred Euros for his in-game and post-game outbursts. A number of pundits have grilled Karakoç for the hypocrisy of calling McGuire a "head case" - Nikita Alexeyev had a particularly snappy comeback: "At least he isn't a head hunter, or for that matter, a case of cowardice that would make even Matt Cooke look brave!" Opinion amongst Turkey's hockey-loving community is mixed as to motive, but many believe that Jack McKenzie did nothing to deserve being run and that O'Leary's only "hockey sin" (as one astute fan put it "if it could even be called that") was putting himself directly in between the two.
Jack McKenzie reportedly ducked out of the final ceremony quickly to go and visit O'Leary at hospital in Dublin, where he thanked O'Leary for putting himself on the line, tapping his trophy for best player for NIR per the Directorate, and saying "I think your name should be on here too." When told about this report from certain nurses by a news anchor, Ryan O'Martin said, "That's so like Jack. He may be the enemy on the international ice, but he's a top bloke off it, and on it if you think about it." O'Martin and McKenzie were briefly teammates with the Belfast Giants before O'Martin's drafting and consequent move to North America, and O'Martin has said more than once in the past that he has a lot of respect for the Norn Iron goalie.

Another day, another Kyrgyz win. The Kyrgyz defence really did well, keeping the Aragonese shot count to just nineteen as the final score was 3-0 for the visitors. Not surprisingly, the offence was again driven by the vaunted "Kipper and Vodo" pairing, as both had a goal and two assists - the other goal was from their fellow first-line forward Erkin Bolotbekov. Ngunia had little trouble against Dagestan, although John Mark Vhalemba got caught napping a little on the lone Dagestani goal by Tagir Tarlanov. Ngunia responded through Uthman Samaai (2 goals), Jerome Masondo, and Thando Mathema (who had two assists on the game as well as his goal) as the final score was 4-1. Dayanç Rahimow scored twice but couldn't inspire the rest of his team to victory as Euskadi beat Turkmenistan 4-2, with four different goalscorers responding for the Basques, Marko Zarragoitía, Luken Ituarte, Mikel Mendizabal, and Iñaki Mendieta.
The members of the Directorate were said to be torn on who was "most sportsmanlike" because there were four particularly high-profile players who didn't take a single penalty. Markus Dube, who did end up winning, was also very aware of this, saying, "It could just as easily have been Askarbek Vodopjanov, Juan Muñoz, or Mikel Mendizabal. I'm grateful that I won, but I will give respect where respect is due." Ties do sometimes happen, but one didn't here.
It is noteworthy that this was the only division in this batch of divisions where nobody got a game misconduct or more.
