HARD WORK THE MAIN REASON FOR LOKO KOTLAS' REBOUND
After the losses of Ural Alapayevsk and S'äämklub Monča to their respective opponents, Lokomotiv Kotlas is now the only first team left in the reserve-team-heavy 2022 Nelösenpokaali, and as such has qualified for the Malenkov Cup to determine Uralica's top semiprofessional football club. But how did this former Bolakliiga club, whose financial woes stemming from perennially poor form caused them to accept a double-relegation, rebound so quickly? If former SiPS manager Teppo Kostamo has anything to say about it, it was pure hard work.
"I've been watching Loko Kotlas with some interest after it was first brought to my attention how good their form was this season," the retired manager said. "And there's one thing I've noticed about them in particular, something that I've noticed in any team in Uralica that has succeeded even somewhat - they work their butts off on the pitch, whether on gameday or in practice. They don't know the meaning of "quit." It's Reformed work ethic taken to the next level."
When Kostamo says this, he has the clout to get it heard. Before retiring in 2020, he won nine Bolakliiga championships, six Kanslerinkilpit, and the UEFA Champions League in 2020. He truly did go out on top! He was replaced as manager by his one-time former captain Jukka Tenhola for the 2021 season.
"I'd argue that a lot of work ethic with little to no talent could actually get you farther than a lot of talent with no work ethic. There is zero room for coasting in Uralican football. But I must admit, I have liked the particular fire I've seen from Lokomotiv Kotlas of late. l don't think they'll take down SiPS or Amkar's reserves, but the fact that they have made it this far shows that their youth program has by and large succeeded. I do wonder if they'll end up back in the B-Liiga one of these days. For now we can just appreciate their football, especially with them now Kolmonen-bound."
On Friday, the plucky "underdogs" take on the second-seeded Amkar reserve team. It may be a sight we don't see for much longer, though, as there is a proposed change on the table for the next board meeting to exclude reserve teams from level trophy competition in much the same way that they are from the Kanslerinkilpi and the early-season zonal tournaments. (On the other hand, there is also a suggestion on the table to allow certain reserve teams to play in the Kolmonen.
