CANUCKS LOOKING GOOD FOR AT LEAST A "FARM TREBLE"
For the second year in a row, the Canucks could pull a "farm treble," where they win the Stanley, Calder, and Kelly Cups in a season. The parent club is up 2-0 and could have gone up 3-0 tonight had there been no malfunctions at ScotiaBank Place in Halifax, but their dominance is unquestionable at the highest level. In the AHL, led by the likes of breakout star Sheldan Rempel, Jack Rathbone, Nic Petan, and Justin Bailey, the Abbotsford Canucks cruised to the Calder Cup, losing just two games en-route. The ECHL's Alaska Aces had it a little tougher, especially in the thrilling seven-game final which concluded last night against the Tulsa Oilers, but thanks largely due to the "beastly" performance by Terrace, BC native and Kitsumkalum First Nation member TJ Billy at both ends of the ice (who was eventually named playoff MVP), they prevailed and won the Kelly Cup.
Could they pull a quadruple like they did last season? It's possible, but with many of Burnaby's better players having moved up to Alaska (not the least of which is Billy) and with Yochanan Weisman now in the parent club, they're not looking quite as unstoppable as they did last season! They didn't blow out the Danbury Whalers of the NEHL in their "close sweep" thereof, winning all three games - 4-3, 5-4, and 3-2 - by a single goal. That could back to bite them in the butt. They were thinking they were going against the MHL's Bedford Hurricanes, who beat the LPHQ's Sorel-Tracy Hawks in five games. They now play the PSHL's South Calgary Inferno, who beat the MSPHL's Minnetonka Moose 3-1. It's worth keeping an eye on the LMHL's Evansville Thunderbirds, who came back from 2-1 down to stun the Mississauga Maple Leafs in five, marking the first time the OPHL has been completely eliminated from contention before the semifinals in NAMPHA's short history.
The semis start tomorrow!
(1) Burnaby vs. (11) Evansville
(2) South Calgary vs. (5) Bedford
But the Canucks organization ladder in general looks pretty strong right now regardless of NAMPHA!
