"BIG THREE" MAINTAIN, VIIPURI GAINS IN LATEST URALICAN AIRPORT SURVEY
A Uralican airline and airport magazine has discovered that some airports have gained ground relative to where they were at in 2019, but the so-called "Big Three" airport cities remain thus within Uralica.
To nobody's great surprise, the ever-expanding, futuristic Kirov International Airport is still Uralica's busiest as it has been since 2008ǃ A stat that surprises most people, though, is that only two of "The Moscow Three" (Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo Airports in the Moscow metro) outdo it in the entire NCIS, and with a whopping 27.9 million passengers passing through it last year, it has actually surpassed Vnukovoǃ It has more passengers than St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airportǃ And it's not the only Uralican airport in eight figures, as both Koltsovo Airport (21.6M) and Uusisointula (14.2M) from Greater Yekaterinburg and also Trinity Airport in Syktyvkar (15M almost on the dotǃ) surpass that mark. So yes, Kirov, Yekaterinburg, and Syktyvkar remain "the big three."
But waitǃ There's moreǃ Fourth amongst cities and individual airports is now Arvid Järnefeldt International Airport just outside of Viipuri, which took on a Western Uralican record 14.7 million passengers last year - not at all bad for a city of only around 122 thousand people! Factors include the smaller capacity of the international airport in Petroskoi, its proximity to St. Petersburg, the need of a major international airport in the west of Uralica, and its proximity to Finland, as many people from southeastern Finland fly out of Viipuri rather than Helsinki for it simply being closer - it is the closest major international airport to Finnish cities as far away as Kuopio. It also helps that the airports at Viipuri and St. Petersburg have an agreement between them - if someone misses a flight from one, there is the possibility of being booked on a flight to the same destination from the other! With a high-speed train link now between the two airports, this has been beneficial to many an NCIS citizen!
The biggest rankings drop was that of Cherepovets International, which dropped from 6th to 11th in Uralica for passengers, having been surpassed by Kola Bay IA in Murmashi, (the biggest rankings riser, up from 14th), Perm', Surgut, Arkhangel'sk, and Izhevsk, whose increasing capacity has forced the airport authority to expand... again. Cherepovets' numbers of passengers have remained relatively stable, though.
There are three newly-declared international airports since the last survey as well. The 2019 survey failed to account for the recent opening of an international terminal at Nizhnyaya Vychegda (International) Airport in Kotlas, plus Sysert Airport and the newly-opened Juganvár International Airport (2020), which were opened to take some of the pressure off of Yekaterinburg and Surgut respectively. There is talk of making Chusovoi Regional Airport and Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky Airport in Votka (the largest domestic-only airports in the last report) international. Here are Uralica's top fifty airports, with international airports in bold:
