CANUCKS LOSE PEARSON TO FREE AGENCY
It's a good thing Kurtis Schaeffer can play both wings, because it looks like he's going to be moving up to the second line next season!
Tanner Pearson simply "wanted too much money for [the Canucks] to offer" per GM Trevor Linden, so they've let him walk after three seasons with the Canucks, including a very productive last two where he managed 179 points in 140 games played, including a career-high 100 points two seasons ago. He has signed a 5-year, 30-million dollar contract with the Hartford Whalers, where he will surely be put up front alongside Luther O'Reilly.
"It's not that he shouldn't be making more money," Linden conceded, "but even with Dean [Chapman] insisting on going for peanuts, we can't have that many large contracts. We wish him the best with Hartford, and he will always be remembered fondly in Vancouver."
Injuries kept Pearson to 60 games, but he still managed 79 points last season. He did, however, only finish eighth on the team in scoring, behind (in order from the top):
- Matvey Kolpakov - 157P (50G 107A)
- JT Miller - 123P (43G 80A)
- Dean Chapman - 117P (50G 67A)
- Patrik Laine - 103P (65G 38A)
- Elias Pettersson - 101P (55G 46A)
- Brock Boeser - 96P (54G 42A)
- Kurtis Schaeffer - 87P (33G 54A)
They have locked up all five other forwards on the top two lines as well as their five best defencemen, though, so there are no worries on that front!
