ANOTHER SERIES, ANOTHER SWEEP
There appears to be no stopping the Vancouver Canucks, even by the Edmonton Oilers. Winning 4-0 tonight, the Canucks won the series by that same amount - of games instead of goals - and Raimo Vasama collected his sixth shutout, just one shy of Martin Brodeur's playoff-record seven; the Canucks' series-opening game in Vancouver went 5-0. They have a while to wait before they find out who they play for the Cup, as Pittsburgh and Toronto are even at two games apiece in the Eastern Conference Final, and it could be the end of the week before that series is completed.
"There are four early choices for the Conn Smythe," said analyst Bob McKenzie. "Two are obvious - Raimo Vasama and Matvey Kolpakov, who have been in everyone's face all regular season long. But then there's also Dean Chapman, who has been terrorising the opposition, offence and defence alike, and the intimidation factor alone has been enough to keep him on the ice instead of in the box for fighting majors, because nobody wants to fight him. It's also kept the rest of the team relatively uninjured! None of the dirt we're sometimes accustomed to seeing in the playoffs against the Canucks, because the opposition teams know full well that someone's going to go after them for it - maybe not exclusively Chapman, but it's him they fear the most, and then there are the two big Uralican defenders, Artur Chingizov and Lauri Lehtola. But that's not all for Chapman. His shot is unblockable. If he keeps up his goalscoring pace, he'll join Paul Coffey and Brian Leetch as the only defenders in NHL history to score double-digits in goals in one playoff season. He's sitting on eight. I have to wonder if he's going to make a bid to break Paul Coffey's NHL record of twelve, and given that the defensive play of both Pittsburgh and Toronto has been a bit behind that of Edmonton, in large part due to Bronson McMahon, I could see him pulling it off. But then for another Conn Smythe possibility, you have Elias Pettersson. Seriously, that second line of the Canucks with Brock Boeser and Tanner Pearson has been amazing, playing better than most first lines have, and Pettersson's speed and read of play are a big part of why."
On that note, it doesn't look as if any Canucks will be making the trip to Russia for the 2021 Worlds for at least the first round and probably not the second either.
