TODAY'S GAMES - HOCKEY
Challenge Cup of Asia
7th-place: Nepal 5 Qatar 3
5th-place: Tyva 4 Persia 2
Bronze medal game: Punjab 1 Jordan 0
Jordan really did play their hearts out against the Punjabis, but they were just too strong. Outshot 44-27, it was Bhawan Grewal who blasted a one-timer past goalie Muqtada Muhammad al-Qadir in the second period, who gave the Punjabis the lone goal in what was otherwise quite an exciting game. It was also on a two-man advantage. But Robin Bawa, who had been mostly critical of his team's playoff performance, had more positive things to say about the game... and also about Jordan's goalie.
"I have to admit, the guys would have scored at least four on any other goalie. They really did play well. They took just one penalty the entire game, which is a colossal improvement in discipline, and they cut back their turnovers significantly. But that al-Qadir guy is something else. Best goalie of the tournament. Better than Max Mogilny for Chukotka, better than Reza Moustafa for Libnan, better than our own Brendan Singh Mehta by his own words... he'll be playing pro abroad soon. Mark my words." al-Qadir currently plays in the IPHL for Al-Arabi Al-Quds in Jerusalem, but there's already been word of certain pro leagues in Europe and certain NAMPHA teams all having the 19-year-old Aqaba native on their radar.
Tomorrow, we have defending champs Chukotka and Cinderella team Libnan butting heads for the Cup!
Challenge Cup of Europe
Bronze medal game: Portugal 3 Asturias 2 (OT)
We have to give the Asturians credit. They fought hard for a full 60 minutes, and even more. But the Portuguese were just... better. Danilo Gouveia's overtime goal sealed the deal, but the fans still gave their hard-fighting home team a standing ovation.
Battle of the former Soviets tomorrow - Nokhchynya vs. Crimea!
Challenge Cup of the Americas
Bronze medal match: Trinidad and Tobago 5 Puerto Rico 3
A nice fun game to watch, but one has to wonder if the results would have been different had Pujols been in goal, because Kenndal McArdle schooled backup Enrique Martinez Garcia, scoring a hat trick. Oh well.
Jamaica vs. the Incas tomorrow!
