URALICA'S FIRST GOLDS!
After obtaining first medals yesterday, Uralica got its first golds today.
Backtracking to yesterday for a moment:
Judo: Anneli Jaatinen improved on her Cape Town performance, winning silver instead of bronze in the women's 48kg, while Etan Semyonov finished fifth in the men's 60kg.
Cycling: We were told to expect medals, and we got medals! This one was actually a bit of a surprise, though, as most pundits pegged Uralica's women's team to finish fifth or sixth. It was a very close finish between second and sixth, but Uralica spurted forward at the last second to claim bronze, behind the Dutch and Cascadians and just edging out the Italians, Australians, and New Confederates.
Fencing: No medals here. Uralica's best shot was Yul'ya Karpina, who improved on her 2016 performance by finishing fourth in the individual epée. Varfolomey Shakirov surprised a few people by getting as far as he did, with his official finish being seventh in the men's individual sabre.
Taekwondo: Because of the split in the weight classes as a result of the expansion of taekwondo, one could argue that it made it harder for Uralica in the lower weight classes... before the tournament started and women's finweight Kesä Luoma fought her way to bronze! Mikhail Astapkov wasn't so lucky in the men's finweight, being eliminated in the quarterfinals and officially finishing sixth. In fairness, though, sixth was not bad considering Astapkov is only eighteen!
Kickboxing: Uralica also nabbed a silver in women's finweight kickboxing. This looks promising for women's finweight MMA, since medallist Nina Biryukova is entered in both! It could see a rivalry blossom between her and Cascadian gold medallist Martina Juarez, who is also in both events!
Weightlifting: Another surprise! Masha Fadeyeva took silver in the women's 49kg after her entry totals only had her seeded seventh!
As you can see, there were a few "close but no cigar" moments for our folks today. But today... today was a different story entirely!
Archery: Move over South Korea! There's a new team of Robin Hoods in town! Yepafrodit Semyonzilotov and Yul'ya Lapsuyeva were absolutely clinical as Uralica's mixed archery team took gold... and set a new world record score in the process! Mixed team archery is a pretty young discipline, mind you, but still, this is a great feeling!
Taekwondo: The first two of what are expected to be a few taekwondo golds for Uralica, Cape Town 49kg silver medallist Martina Sanshina paid Park Sook-Ju back this time around, winning the women's flyweight, while Konstantin Demidenko stunned perhaps even himself with what had to be the performance of his life in the men's flyweight!
Billiards: Cha-CHING! Uralica won eight medals today on the tables, four of them gold! Men's and women's fifteen-ball, women's Russian pyramid, and men's seven-ball were gold, men's fifteen-ball and Russian pyramid brought in a silver, and women's fifteen-ball and men's equal offence pool resulted in bronze, which could be good news for straight pool! Congratulations to gold medallists Matvey Ustinov, Heidi Zimmerman, Kseniya Kosova, and Elmo Kruus, silver medallists Ivan Sudakov and Avgust Prokin, and bronze medallists Debora Yovova and Gedeon Artemyevich!
Shooting: Arrows and cue balls aren't the only things Uralicans can shoot! Although Daria Vdovina took silver at Cape Town, it wasn't her that ended up claiming the gold, and although she almost got Uralica a second medal (she ended up fourth), it was part of the "scary" youth movement that Uralica has that ended up winning the women's 10m air rifle. Likewise with the men, where Vladimir Maslennikov was only outdone by his younger counterpart, taking home the silver.
But here's what really had people scared. The "two yoots!" (Excuse me, your honour... two youths.) They walked into Tokyo as being part of the "solid group of youth shooters who actually have the competition more worried than the vets." They will walk out as world record holders across the board. Masha Koryazhmina broke Chen Dongqi's qualification record of 422.9, shooting a 426.5 (out of a maximum 436), then shot a 213.3 to beat Yi Siling's finals record. And then there's Iosif Kavelin, who actually had his equipment checked for modifications after the shoot was over because of his "ridiculous" score of 214.8 (keep in mind this is out of 218 max), after shooting a 641.5 (out of 654) in qualifiers - both obliterating the previous records! He was completely clean (and cooperative in the checking process), and one checker turned to him and said, "I guess you're just that good!" He had passed checks for enhancements before even partaking, as was the standard established in 2016 and used again for biathlon in 2018.
Not all was coming up medals for Uralica, of course. Besides the aforementioned results out of the medals, they've already been completely eliminated from roller vert skating, any singles competition in jai alai, and men's doubles in tennis.
MMA starts tomorrow! And more chances for Uralica to glean medals from the pool tables!
