Even more hockey.
EGYPT BEATS EAST AFRICA FOR BRONZE
It was a relatively quiet day today for hockey because of the break day for Divisions IV through VI, but there was one game on tap today regardless. Raid Omar Hanafy scored the deciding shootout goal as Egypt took the shootout 4-2 and the overall game 4-3. It was a close-fought game, but in the end it was goalie Samir Tarek making the big saves when it counted most, knocking the East Africans out by grabbing Abibu Yomba's shot attempt out of the air as it was headed for the top left corner. Had Yomba scored, it would have been up to Qasim El-Amin to score to win the game.
The Egyptians were quite pleased with the effort, although they were disappointed that they couldn't play for gold. But as team captain Zahid Abdelnaby said, "that's hockey."
The gold medal game between hosts Botswana and Cinderella story Fangland goes tomorrow.
THREE NEW TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR PNHL
The Pacific Northwest Hockey League has finally made good on its promise to max out to 32 (per NAMPHA regulations), previously only having 29 teams, with eight in the Far North Division and seven in the other three divisions. All three teams are independent for now, although with names like the Williams Lake Warriors, the North Shore Wild, and the Alberni Whalers, that may not last long.
"The contract between the Hartford Whalers and the Kenai Peninsula Salmon Kings is up at the end of this season," said PNHL Commissioner Russ Courtnall, "so I've received notice from the Whalers that they want to negotiate with the new team in Port Alberni. The same is true of the Minnesota Wild and the Mission Grizzlies; the Wild are eyeing up the new team on the North Shore. The Saskatchewan Warriors have already set their sights on Williams Lake. But we're hoping that as many teams of ours as possible will be affiliated for next season." This number will not include the fiercely independent Kamloops Sun Devils, defending champions from last year.
The current NHL affiliation list of PNHL teams is as follows, counting teams in negotiation (in parentheses):
Chilliwack Bruins -> Boston Bruins
(Prince George Roughnecks) -> Buffalo Sabres
Fort St. John Flames -> Calgary Flames
Cranbrook Avalanche -> Colorado Avalanche
Salmon Arm Stars -> Dallas Stars
Westshore Wings -> Detroit Red Wings
(Vernon Outlaws) -> Edmonton Oilers
(Whitehorse Wolves) -> Hamilton Bulldogs
Richmond Dragons -> Halifax Hurricanes
(Alberni Whalers) -> Hartford Whalers
Comox Valley Cavalry -> Kansas City Cavalry
(North Shore Wild) -> Minnesota Wild
Ridge Meadows Rockets -> Montreal Canadiens
Parksville Predators -> Nashville Predators
(Abbotsford Heat) -> New Jersey Devils
(Kelowna Lake Monsters) -> New York Rangers
Anchorage Arsenal -> Ottawa Senators
Nanaimo Flyers -> Philadelphia Flyers
(Fairbanks Freeze) -> Pittsburgh Penguins
(Mission Grizzlies) -> Quebec Nordiques
Campbell River Sharks -> San Jose Sharks
(Williams Lake Warriors) -> Saskatchewan Warriors
South Shore Storm -> Seattle Kraken
(Kenai Peninsula Salmon Kings) -> St. Louis Blues
(Cowichan Cougars) -> Toronto Maple Leafs
Burnaby Canucks -> Vancouver Canucks
(Victoria Lumberjacks) -> Washington Capitals
Independents:
Mat-Su Kodiaks
Juneau Spirit Bears
Kamloops Sun Devils
Penticton Scorpions
Skeena Valley Seals
DEVILS SAFE FOR FIVE MORE YEARS
Although told that they would be moved if they didn't get their attendance numbers up a couple years ago, it appears that NHL Commissioner Bill Daly is pleased enough with the progress of the New Jersey Devils that they will be reassessed in five years rather than yearly.
When asked what he thought was the primary factor in boosted attendance, besides the increase in quality of the team, owner Josh Harris says it may also have to do with the relocation of the New York Islanders to Kansas City. He proposed, "When you have so many teams in a small area in a country where hockey still isn't #1, even if the city itself is a traditional centre of the game, attendance suffers. Los Angeles had the same problem until the Anaheim Ducks moved to Hamilton. Being in hockey-mad Canada is about the only reason the Bulldogs have had any luck pulling the crowds."
