When I first started learning, I browsed simple books. One I really liked was "50 Things To See With A Small Telescope" by John A. Read ’13. That is how I learned of Stellarium, the different types of telescopes, filters. It's a great book for those who don't have money for a bells & whistles telescope. Before I got my Celestron, I used my spotting scope & was able to view many of these things easily.
