Still sounds pretty weak, TBH - unless the brine would've improved its protectiveness somehow, which this page suggests it wouldn't have done.

(Admittedly, it does say cotton armour would be pretty good against cutting, and would offer some protection against projectiles and impact weapons - but it'd offer very little protection against thrusting!)

Quora really sleeps on the quality of Aztec and Native American armor in general. There's a reason why plenty of Conquistadors ditched their steel breastplates in favor of cotton armor.
