Yesterday, CGP Grey uploaded a video in which he made the case for "Weekend Wednesday", i.e. working on Saturday, and taking Wednesday off instead:
His justification is: working five days in a row is too long, because productivity goes down without breaks, and people are often too tired to work efficiently on Thursday and Friday. Furthermore, the weekend isn't great for non-work activities: Saturday is spent recovering from the five-day work week, and then Sunday is marred by the looming Monday. However, after spending some time with his 'Weekend Wednesday' arrangement, he's found that he's far more productive: the shorter bursts of work are less draining, and easier to recover from (which also makes him feel more energetic on his days off). There are further benefits too: he finds himself with quiet leisure activities on Wednesday, and a quiet workplace on Saturday. He acknowledges that this work schedule won't be for everyone; however, in his experience, it's worked well for him.
Personally, however, I'm not convinced that it would work well for me. First of all, I don't think the premise really applies to me: I tend to have long lie-ins on Saturday morning, so I don't spend the whole day recovering. Secondly, I don't like the idea of having just one day off at a time, instead of two together: I'd become reluctant to use them for travelling and socialising, because they'd become too valuable as 'rest' days. Thirdly, it'd become a pain to even arrange social activities with my friends: if some of us were doing 'Weekend Wednesday' and others weren't, then we'd only be left with Sundays, when places would be very busy because of all the other social groups who have the same problem. Fourthly, it'd become a pain for companies on different schedules, who would only be able to do business with each other for four days a week.
So, do you like the idea of 'Weekend Wednesday' - and, have you given it a go yourself?
