Are there any character deaths that you thought was unnecessary? Or, perhaps it was a character you loved that died?

Grey's Anatomy

Spoiler
Derek. Shonda Rimes has a thing for killing off characters when it's their time go. Derek's death was very sad but I see why he died rather than be written off. He was head over heels over Meredith and that wasn't going to change.

George. He was going to be written out anyway to join the army. I feel like there was no need for him to die because that plot would have been sufficient. At least he died heroically.

Harry Potter

Spoiler
Snape. His death definitely was powerful, especially when Harry saw him. His memories explained a lot about him as a character, especially since we bat around with the whole idea of him being a bad guy throughout the whole seven books. I think that he is incredibly admirable and dedicated. His love for Lily was beautiful. One scene that gives me goosebumps about him is when he says to Dumbledore that he has been leading Harry to be a pig for slaughter and Dumbledore asks him if he cares. He shows his stag.

The Hunger Games

Spoiler
Finnick. I loved his character, especially his story and romance with Annie. I thought that his death could have been avoidable but I see why the twist happened.

Prim. Katniss volunteered in the Hunger Games in the first place to protect her. Again, I see why this happened. It's a consequence of war and Gale could have been attributed to be the cause of her death by Katniss. At least society ended up being in a better place!

Skins

Spoiler
Freddie. Every generation a Skins character dies. Freddie's death occurred right at the end of the second generation by Effie's crazy therapist. It was a bit sudden and didn't really add too much to the plot.

Stranger Things

Spoiler
Billy. In season 3, he protects Eleven from being killed. He was an antagonist in the show but his struggle with being controlled by the monster meant that he was trying to be a good person in the end. His death is extremely powerful and redeems him, especially since he was such a disliked character. Complete 180 this.

I know I have more examples that I could probably think of later but this is a good start.

You?

The Walking Dead comic
Alice.

Yeah, she died a hero and what have you, but I'm super salty over her death because she was about the only competent character on the Prison story arc and had a lot of room to develop.

I mean, Christ, she was very good at medicine and had received training from a professional... did any of them even understand how key her role (current and future) was? She was to be protected at all cost, not spent as cannon fodder.

Alice's passing confirmed everything I suspected about Rick's ability to lead.

Professor Layton and the Lost Future
So for those who don't know, in the final chronological installment of the Professor Layton series, it was revealed that Layton's sweetheart Claire died 10 years ago in a tragic accident at a laboratory conducting a time travel experiment. Near the end of the game, it is revealed that she didn't actually die - she was instead transported 10 years into the future. But it's also revealed that she can't remain in this time forever, and will eventually have to travel back to the day of the accident to die in the explosion. She and the Professor share a really sweet moment and then as she leaves he takes his hat off (the only time in the entire series that he does this!) I don't at all think that they handled this badly - on the contrary, it was really well done - but it broke my heart at the time because Layton is just the nicest guy ever. :(

@"Dust Bowl": I edited that post to remove the character's name from the spoiler title bar. (After all, if you're going to put the character's name in there, where it's visible to everyone, then it rather defeats the point of having the spoiler tag to begin with :P !)

Anyway, here's an example of my own:

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame
Black Widow and Iron Man.

Both characters sacrificed themselves: the former at a critical point in the movie (to obtain the Soul Stone), and the latter to defeat Thanos for good. Their sacrifices marked the culmination of a journey that had started back in 2008 - and, naturally, people had grown to know that team of characters rather well over the course of 20+ movies (even though I'd only watched about six of those movies prior to Endgame, I was already pretty invested myself). It was a great way to tie everything up - but, at the same time, it was a real tearjerker (especially at the end, where Iron Man told his daughter via hologram that "I love you 3,000" :'( ).

I guess we could also include Gamora in this, for her sacrifice in Infinity War, which closely mirrored Black Widow's (even though Gamora ended up being 'revived' via time travel). By contrast, the 'vanishings' at the end of Infinity War held very little emotional impact for me: it was always very clear that Endgame was going to reverse those :P !

Grey's Anatomy

Spoiler
Derek: He was too in love with Meredith and was planning to relocate anyway and her life was still in Seattle. It sucked though.

George: I still don't feel he should have been killed off since he was leaving anyway to join the Army. Senseless and unnecessary.

--------------------------

V: The 2009 Series

Spoiler

Tyler: Killing off any kid no matter their age is sickening and not necessary!

------------------------

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Spoiler

Phil Coulson: This guy made the show the hit it is so this was not necessary!

Lincoln Campbell: Despite the fact he died in Daisy's place, they could have found a way to defeat HIVE without killing him.

I'm glad that we both agree with this one. It's awesome that you've watched it too!

Also...

Killing Eve

Spoiler
Bill. I am not overly fussed about his death as it was early on so we didn't get attached to him. However, it was sad for Eve to lose her long-term work friend.

Niko. He was married to Eve for like two and a half seasons. I know that this show is full of death and his marriage was pretty much over with her so his death wasn't completely unexpected. Villianelle's obsession with Eve is definitely problematic for the Twelve but they know killing Eve herself has too many problems attached to it. As this happened on the latest episode, I hate how there's a chance Villianelle could be framed for this, especially since she spared him before and has been framed for this by Dasha. If Eve does believe it is her, I hope that it isn't for long. Poor guy honestly. He wasn't involved in this and didn't want to be.

Riverdale

Spoiler
Archie's dad, Fred Andrews. Luke's passing was incredibly sad and the show did his character justice. I have a lot of respect for this.

I agree with you as far as Fred's death. I use to watch Luke on Beverly Hills 90210. I was in my early 20s back then so his death hit me hard. I was a fan of his.

First ones I think of are a few deaths in the Harry Potter books. Some were so unnecessary! (Added to the fact J.K. can be a bit flighty with her decisions... I reckon some might have survived had she been in a better mood at the time.)

That is a very good point, especially in the massive battle at the end. Maybe she wanted to demonstrate the consequences of war... or she was feeling evil, haha.

Yeah, I think there had to be a lot of deaths in the final battle - including some beloved characters - in order to drive that point home.

Still, I do recall reading that:

Spoiler
Lupin and Tonks were going to survive originally. Theirs were certainly the saddest of the deaths in the final battle.

Well, theirs and Fred Weasley's. As one online commenter put it: "for George Weasley, every mirror is the Mirror of Erised".
