ITV will broadcast the Euro 1996 Championships in their entirety after this year’s equivalent was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The archive footage of all 31 games, featuring England’s run to the semi-finals on home soil, will be available on the ITV Hub, while ITV4 will air five of England’s matches as well as the final between Germany and the Czech Republic.

An iconic summer, from Paul Gascoigne’s ‘Dentist’s Chair’ celebration to a 4-1 demolition of the Netherlands, Terry Venables’ England team – and Badiel and Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ famed chart-topping anthem ‘Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)’ – captured the nation.

Paul Mortimer, Head of Digital Channels & Acquisitions, ITV said: “Nothing brings the country together like Euro fever, and with this year’s tournament postponed to 2021, we’re giving our audience a chance to relive one of the all-time great sporting events, Euro ’96.

Sounds good :) . There will be plenty of people who didn't watch it at the time, because they're too young or just weren't interested at the time (the first football tournament I paid any attention to was the 1998 FIFA World Cup).

I don't know whether I'll watch it, but it'd be nice to have some sport!

Sounds like a good idea. I'll check it out when they show it.

Fun fact - I was born the day after the Euro 96 final. :P

I'd be interested to watch some of these, just to see what the game used to be like. I'm sure it's changed so much over the years! Plus, it'd be fun to see players that I've only really heard about in their prime.

Dude, France 98 was also the first tournament I paid attention to!

And this is neat!

Nice :P

So would I, really. I mean, I must have seen most of them in 1998, but there will probably be one or two who were just a bit 'before my time'.

And apparently, Euro 96 won't be the only old sporting event that the BBC airs. They're also doing London 2012:

I'm hoping there's going to be some classic Formula One - but, we'll see, I guess :P .

Oooh, I like this idea! I'd watch it (some of it again??), although I'm not sure others in the household would be in agreement to do that. But I'd so be up for reliving this moment of my nostalgic '90s to see the old footie favourites, and just the look of the filming quality and how the picture quality has changed so much since, though it looked fine enough then... waffle waffle.

Got to watch at least one. :D

Yeah, picture quality is one of those things that's always better in the memory than in reality  . Still, it's probably the kind of thing you'd get used to quite quickly (and I watch plenty of old sport on YouTube, so I'm pretty used to it anyway  )

One thing I am wondering about is, would they bother updating the graphics packages? Someone did a video of classic F1 races with modern graphics, and I quite liked the effect :P
