As the world's economy has grown over the years, and as our societies have evolved and changed, the skylines of our greatest cities have also transformed - some of them quite radically. The following video, from YouTube channel B1M, shows some of the most dramatic examples of this (and also looks at how these cities might change in the future):

Featured in this video are the following cities (with the following "Then and now" comparisons):

  • Australia Sydney, Australia (1967 vs. 2013)
  • China Shanghai, China (1987 vs. 2013)
  • United Arab Emirates Dubai, United Arab Emirates (1990 vs. 2005)
  • Brazil Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1889 vs. 2007)
  • United States New York City, USA (1961 vs. 2014)
  • United States Las Vegas, USA (1940 vs. 2017)

Some quite striking ones here :O . Were there any that particularly surprised you - and do you have any more to add?

Sadly, the video in the opening post is private now :( . But, here's another picture - which shows not how much things have changed, but how much things have stayed the same:

Honestly, the only significant change here seems to be the road surface  !

Edited the topic title, so this thread isn't just for city skylines... it's for any pictures or videos that offer a "Then and Now" comparison :P .

Next up, we have the British Union of Fascists headquarters in Durham in 1934. When the second picture was taken, in 2020, it had become a kebab shop  :

Detroit in 1882, and 2017:

Rather sad :'( . Not only because it illustrates the decline of the city itself, but those old buildings would've been beautiful when they were new, and in good condition!

Here's a fairly extreme one, showing how Manhattan would have looked in 1621, compared to 2021:
