Apple has been fined 25 million euros (£21m, $27m) for deliberately slowing down older iPhone models without making it clear to consumers.

The fine was imposed by France's competition and fraud watchdog DGCCRF, which said consumers were not warned.

In 2017, Apple confirmed that it did slow down some iPhones, but said it only did so to "prolong the life" of the devices.

Apple said in a statement that it had resolved the issue with the watchdog.

Many customers had long suspected that Apple slowed down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade when a new one was released.

Yeah, sounds justified to me... if the slowdown really was done to prolong the life of the device, then there was no reason to conceal this from the customers.

Hopefully, this will discourage manufacturers from doing similar things, or at least to be more open and honest about them.

How are you "more honest" about this?

"Yeah, we are gonna make your product that you paid through the nose for really annoying to use. K? Cool! Bye!".

My friend and I would always say they did this, but I didn't know they actually did. I suppose if it's justified it's ok...  but then if they had nothing to hide, let people know.

Ofc apple would do this sorts of stuff, there was a similar thing about the batteries too.

Another push on the scale of apple and android has shifted in favor of android yet again.
Wait really, I exist? Weird, I thought I wasn't human.

People always used to say this as well so it doesn’t surprise me that it’s confirmed now. I’ve got a 6S as well. Before that, a 5S.

Looks like Apple has agreed to a settlement:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51706635

Apparently, it may cost them up to $500 million - which makes me shudder to think what they might have had to pay out had it gone to court and the decision had gone against them :O . (I know it's Apple, and I don't exactly have much sympathy for them, but still...)

Apple has to pay a fine of $500 million?

Sorry it took me months to reply to this :P . But, it's not really a 'fine' as such: they agreed to pay $500m in order to stop the case from going to court.

Anyway, they've now reached a separate settlement of $113 million, to stop the lawsuits in the USA:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-54996601

A paltry sum for a company of Apple's stature; however, it does all add up...

Should have went to court to be honest. The fines a dumb. Apple needs to pay much much more.

And now, a separate compensation claim has been made in the UK, which could see a total of £750 million ($910 million) being paid to affected iPhone users:

https://9to5mac.com/2022/06/16/iphone-th...ion-claim/

I was still using an old iPhone until December 2021, so it's entirely possible that I might get something out of this - but, we'll see what happens :P .
