The British Darts Organisation (BDO) says its World Championship prize money will be "reduced somewhat" after only 15% of tickets were sold.
In a letter to players, sent just five days before the tournament is due to start, BDO chairman Des Jacklin said income was down 85% on predictions.
He added commercial advisers Sportotal had failed to secure a sponsor because of perceptions the BDO is "toxic".
Jacklin said the news was "extremely difficult" for him to write.
He also added that income from TV contracts had been "largely decimated" by production costs, and by the payment of previous debts.
Sad to see . For those who are unaware, the BDO World Darts Championship began in 1978, and it remained the world's most prestigious darts tournament until 1993... however, many of the top players then created their own rival organisation (the PDC), which started running its own World Championship in 1994. For a while, it wasn't clear which title was the most prestigious, but it's pretty clear now: the PDC awards more prize money than the BDO, and has attracted the vast majority of the top players (indeed, four of the last five BDO champions have since switched to the PDC). As a result, the BDO tournament has come to be seen as little more than a feeder for the PDC - and, this is the end result .
Unfortunately for fans of the BDO (with its longer history than the PDC), it's not clear what the future holds for their championship...
