Ah yes, that reminds me of another of my mistakes, from The Battle for Wesnoth .
The first time I played, I recruited way too many horsemen, and not enough of anything else. These are fast-moving, and have a devastatingly powerful charging attack - so when they win battles, they absolutely dominate them. Unfortunately, they're also very vulnerable to certain kinds of units (archers, pikemen, and anything else with piercing weapons) - so, they die quite easily as well. And quite a lot of mine died .
Eventually, I lost so many units that I had to re-start the entire campaign. This time, I recruited a much more varied army: it still included some horsemen, but there were more archers and magi and other kinds of units alongside them. This strategy proved to be much more successful!
