Unused or dummied-out content in games
#1
During a game's development, work will be done on a whole load of mechanics, levels, characters, and so on. Some of these features may not make the final cut, for one reason or another: perhaps the developers found that these features didn't enhance the game or weren't fun to play; perhaps the features were only meant for testing but not fully removed; or perhaps the developers simply ran out of time or money. Whatever the case, this is the place for them :P .

Do note that dummied-out content is related to, but differs from, Easter Eggs. While both kinds of content are 'hidden', players are supposed to be able to find Easter eggs if they look hard enough - but they're not supposed to be able to find dummied-out content (at least, not without breaking the game in ways that the developers didn't anticipate  ). So, if you've found an Easter egg (or something that looks like an Easter egg), post it in that thread instead :P .

Now, for an example of some dummied-out content - here are some shortcuts that existed in development builds of Lego Racers, in the "Knightmare-athon" and "Pirate Skull Pass" tracks. They were removed at the last minute (I suspect because they would have made these races too easy had they remained); however, the developers didn't succeed at removing all vestiges of them:

Anyway, pretty much every game is going to have some form of unused or dummied-out content - so, there should be plenty to post in this thread :P . Does anyone have any more that they'd like to share?

The original Crash Bandicoot had a fair amount of content cut, but most of it was incomplete levels. However, Stormy Ascent was a finished level that was removed prior to release due to being too difficult. Despite that reasoning, the level was officially released as free DLC for the N. Sane Trilogy.

Well, I'm glad it saw the light of day in the end. Since it was basically complete, it would have been a real shame for it to be left on the cutting room floor (and besides, it sounds like the kind of challenge that a lot of players would relish after completing the main game!)

Another example is the religion system in Civilization: Beyond Earth. This game was heavily based on Civilization V, which has a religion system - and this system was left in when Beyond Earth was made. It's not used, but it's still present in the game's code.

(I suspect it's a similar story with some other unused Civ 5 mechanics, such as the World Congress, but I'm unsure about that :P )
