I'm sure I recall hearing about generals in World War II saying "don't call me Shirley" in order to rebuke people who questioned their orders.
However, I later discovered that the phrase originated from the 1980 movie Airplane! (of all things) - so, that would have been impossible
. (As an off-topic aside, this line suffered from a case of "Seinfeld is Unfunny" for me: when I saw the movie, and heard this line being used in it, it came off to me as a boring cliché, since I was unaware that this movie was the one that originated it
!)
