NASA's Perseverance rover (a.k.a. Mars 2020)

Just thought I would start a thread about NASA's planned Mars 2020 rover. (This is not to be confused with the European Space Agency's "ExoMars" rover, now named the Rosalind Franklin rover; that mission has its own thread already!)

As the name suggests, Mars 2020 is a mission which is set to go to Mars, with a planned launch date of July 2020. It'll take around seven months to make the journey - and then, it's expected to land on the Red Planet in February 2021. Once there, it'll search for a range of signs of life on Mars (either past or present), as well as studying the potential for humans to live there one day. If you want to learn more about the mission, you can do that at NASA's official Mars 2020 website, which is here:

https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/

So far, it seems that the mission is going well. The rover got its wheels last week - and the robotic arm used to collect rock samples will be next. If all goes well, then testing will be able to begin soon!

Good luck to them :D .

This rover has a permanent name now. It'll be called "Perseverance":

Apparently, the name was picked by a 13-year-old schoolboy, which I think is a pretty awesome touch Thumbs-up !

Apparently, recent research has suggested that there may well be remains of past life at this rover's intended destination. If there was any, then its remains would have been buried rapidly - which means they could easily have been preserved and protected:

I guess we'll need to wait and see, though!

Apparently, this thing will be carrying a little helicopter with it:

Following a competition, this helicopter has been named "Ingenuity":

Congrats to Tuscaloosa school student Vaneeza Rupani, who suggested the name!

This rover has now been attached to the rocket that will take it to Mars:

A small update, perhaps - but, it's encouraging to see continued progress!

Good news: it's launched successfully :D !

Here's a quick video of the launch:

Let's hope the rest of the journey proves to be just as smooth!

This is such awesome news!  I have been waiting so long for the launch.

NASA had a "Send Your Name To Mars" campaign running, and I submitted my request in May of 2019 and was accepted.  I received a Frequent Flyer Club card (313,586,649 points earned 8D ), and downloaded a Mission Patch.

My name and 10,932,294 others were stenciled by electron beam onto three fingernail-sized silicon chips, along with the essays of the 155 finalists in NASA's "Name the Rover" contest.  They were attached to an aluminum plate on Perseverance.

Looking forward to its arrival and landing.  So exciting!
In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
People often forget that kindness is free.

Nice :D ! I think I might have submitted my name for that; however, I never heard back from them (and I might be thinking of something else anyway :P )

But, yeah - I'm looking forward to its arrival. I just hope it goes better than Beagle 2's :( !
