Thread prefixing

This has the following advantages:

  • It's less open to interpretation than "NSFW" (or "Mature");
  • It's not an Americanism;
  • It doesn't tie us to a standard for films, that isn't applicable to shorter videos;
  • It makes it clear that content without the prefix should be reasonably child-friendly;
  • It makes it clear that it's not referring to 18+ content (which is still forbidden).

Of course, the slight oddity with this system is that the entire board is a 13+ board, in that only people aged 13 and over can join :P . But this would differentiate between jokes that I'd be reasonably comfortable showing to children under 13, and those that I wouldn't.

So, does this sound good?

If a video has swearing in it, but the swearing is censored with a beep sound effect, would the video still need the prefix?

In that situation, it wouldn't require a prefix :) .

Maybe we couls add an [APRIL FOOLS] prefix for the joke threads that get created on April Fools each year.

Also, maybe instead of locking those threads once April Fools is over, those threads could be moved to the Jokes sub-board instead

Perhaps :) . It'd be a small way of acknowledging the recent "TCH and Fun" thread, after all!

Although, if we did add this, then it'd be staff prefix, rather than a member prefix - because it'd only ever be applied when moving these threads to Jokes, Memes, and Shorts (which would need to be done by a staff member anyway :P ).

That April Fools tag is a shout - I agree that it should be staff only.

So, what would be a suitable icon for this?

There are several 'laughter' icons in the free version of Font Awesome (for example: this one, and this one) - so, would something like that work?

Those look suitable. :)

Another idea is for happy news threads that get bumped up. Maybe keep the happy news prefix, but edit the thread title to add [Old News] to it.

That might work - but to be honest, I think it'd be pretty clunky. Threads would start with something like:

"[Image: happy-news.png] [Old News] Man saves dog from freezing"

Which, IMO, just looks messy. Bear in mind that only 48 characters can display on the board index - and almost half of that is taken up by prefixes (which wouldn't even be able to have the same style as each other, due to the limitations of how the board works).

I do think it's cleaner to have just the one prefix - and I'm afraid in that case, the 'Old News' prefix would have to take precedence, because it conveys more useful information.

However, I'll see if I can produce some April Fools mock-ups this weekend :) !
