I know, it may not be 'History' yet...
Unbelievably, we are approaching the five year anniversary of this absolute tragedy.
So I thought it'd be appropriate that we have a general kind of topic in memory of such an awful event.
I don't know why, but from the very beginning of hearing about this story it got me more than most other world events similar to it really ever have.
I remember it was a Friday morning, still Ramadan, I was at work and it was just before 7AM on our July 18th 2014 when the Butcher who owned his store next door to the one I was working in came in and told us what had just hit the news. Information was scarce, but the very basic 'a plane has been shot down, Malaysia airlines, lots of Australians on board' message was pretty loud and pretty clear.
I guess the hardest part of the whole story as it unfolded through the day was the story of Mo, Evie and Otis. Three children who had boarded the plane with their grandfather, Nick, to make it back to Australia in time for the school term, while their parents Anthony and Rin finished up in the Netherlands - due to return to Australia two days later.
Their story, and footage of their three amazing children can be found here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-10/a...y/10998600
I could never get my head around the strength Anthony and Rin must have had to muster up. How it must have affected them. How they must have felt as parents. I still can't.
It's amazing to hear that time has made things easier on them, and that Mo, Evie and Otis live on in their hearts - and that they consider young Violet a gift from them.
Anyway - nearly five years on.
RIP to all who lost their lives.
And all the love to everyone affected, even in the smallest way by this awful, tragic event.
