Monopoly variants and special sets
#1
There's no question that Monopoly is one of the most famous and successful board games ever created. As a result, there are hundreds of special editions of the game: many cities and pop culture franchises have one, and I can also see quite a few sports teams that have their own commemorative edition :P . It's also spawned a number of gameplay variants and spin-offs with a similar theme. How many of these have you played?

Myself, I can remember playing four of them:

  • Chester & Cheshire Edition: Not listed on the wiki page, but I know it exists, because I own it :lol: .
  • Make-Your-Own-Opoly: My uncle and his children had one of these, which they filled with locations of personal significance to themselves;
  • Oxford University Edition: This had university colleges instead of streets. I can't find any information on this online (there is an "Oxford" version, but that's themed around the city as a whole) - so I suspect this was another "Make-Your-Own-Opoly" version :P .
  • Anti-Monopoly: The first three were all just themed Monopoly sets, but this was a variant with different rules. Players could choose to be 'monopolists' or 'competitors': monopolists got higher rewards that were harder to earn, whereas competitors had a lower 'ceiling' but reached it quicker and more easily. I didn't think it was much good, but it was fun to try :P .

So, have you played any of these - and, do you own any?

My dad has the Monopoly 1997 Star Wars Monopoly Limited CollectorS 20Th Anniversary Edition

from from what I heard a while ago the 1940s "War Time" edition which has lower quality stuff over all is highly sought after by collectors. Personally I would love to have a WW2 POW edition that had a map hidden in it.

I've played a couple of regional ones - one based on Staffordshire, and one based on Northern Ireland. I've also played Monopoly Express, if that counts. Can't remember any others, but I've seen hundreds of them advertised.

Nice :) . Pity they don't do a ferret one, though!

(I mean, I'm just assuming they don't - because I'm sure you'd have it if it existed :lol: )
