Kantoceras cervoides(Kanto horned deer-like animal)
Kantoceras is a modest sized antilocaprid from East Asia. Once they roamed in large herds but now they are confined to Japan and the Korean peninsula. Kantoceras first appeared in the late Pliocene and is still around today. It is sometimes called a Red elk but the name is misleading as it is not a cervid. The only other surviving antilocaprid is the pronghorn in North America. Kantoceras grow to about 1.5 meters tall, 2.5 meters long, and weigh about 500 kilograms. Plants are the mainstay of its diet. Today, there are not many predators other than humans but in prehistoric times large raptors, wolves, and saber-toothed cats probably fed on these ungulates. Leopards, tigers and bears may also have posed a threat. Though unheard of now, Obese koi fish(sharks, not Onchoichthys) and large whales might've fed on them while the antilocaprids were swimming between islands. These creatures now live largely as domesticated animals and are often used for riding in historical reenactments. In the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke, the main character Ashitaka rides a Kantoceras called Yakul. The real world animal was a direct inspiration for the pack animal of this persistent hero.
