After this, I wouldn't be at all surprised if both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo retired from international football.

Well, Uruguay are still a strong team, even though they're not totally dominating the scene like they did back in the 1920s . So, I guess it's not that much of a surprise. 

This next result, on the other hand, is a surprise: 

Russia 1 - 1 Spain (Russia win 4-3 on penalties)

Russia make the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time as an independent nation. (Last time they did it as part of the USSR was in 1970)

England 1 - 1 Colombia (England win 4-3 on penalties)

No, you didn't misread that. For once, England actually did win a penalty shoot-out.

That was so tense, though . I was sure we were about to go out here!

That was such an intense match but well deserved. They played it dirty against us and so many yellow cards were dished out. That guy that was rubbing his head on Henderson's chest should've received a red card, I think. The pub went so mental after the game.

Yeah, it would have been pretty sickening if we'd gone out on penalties there. Especially given that we were up until the last couple of minutes of regulation time - and Colombia deployed every dirty trick in the book, short of trying to shrink the goal. 

Anyway, the first two quarter-finals were played today. The first wasn't a massive surprise: 
France 2 - 0 Uruguay

But the second one was a real stunner : 
Belgium 2 - 1 Brazil  

Granted, the Seleção weren't on the receiving end of a 7-1 defeat this time - but, that doesn't make this any less of a shocker!

As if Brazil got an own goal, haha. Bring on 3pm, I have faith in us!

We'll see. With Brazil out, I'm really starting to feel as though we could win this. That doesn't mean I think we will - we'd be against France or Belgium in the final, and we'd be underdogs against either team - but, even so, it does feel like it's within reach. 

I'd favour us over Sweden tomorrow - but, they're still a potent and experienced team that's capable of beating us, so I won't count my chickens before they've hatched here .
