PHP upgrades can be a pain in the neck, as it was when we upgraded. Runtime warnings were upgraded to errors for things like division by zero and non-numeric values in calculations, when we upgraded the PHP version. This meant that lots of bugs were found in some years after we upgraded.

Let’s hope the security holes don’t take too long to fix alongside the bugs that result from the PHP upgrade 🤞

I’m a little concerned that 4chan was brought back online prior to the upgrade though, if that is the case.

I don't believe them.

Yeah, PHP upgrades are always a nightmare - as I know from my own experience of this place -_- . It's especially bad when your site depends on plugins that haven't been kept up to date by their developers - although, I don't know how much of an issue that is for 4chan specifically :P .

But it is important to keep your PHP up to date (especially if you run an 'edgy' site that's likely to attract a lot of attackers, as is the case with 4chan!)

We have enough toxicity on social media, we don't need it on image boards as well!

Images, thumbnails and posting are not working.

Security measures have been taken:
- PDF uploads have been temporarily disabled due to a bogus PDF upload having exfiltrated databases and source code.
- A board for sharing Flash animations remains offline as the team saw “no realistic way to prevent similar exploits using .swf files”.

The problem was blamed on:
- Insufficient skilled man-hours to update the code and infrastructure
- Being starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers and service providers who had succumbed to external pressure campaigns

In my opinion:
- While 4chan was popular for the wrong reasons, I’m not sure advertising is a viable business model as “cancel culture” should have been anticipated!
- Due to the above I doubt that they have sufficient profit margins to attract software developers.
