Netflix drama Adolescence has become the first streaming show to top the UK's weekly TV ratings, beating BBC shows like The Apprentice and Death in Paradise in the latest official rankings., external

The first episode of Adolescence was watched by 6.45 million people in its first week, according to ratings body Barb.

That is the biggest audience for any streaming TV show in the UK in a single week, beating the 6.3 million who watched Fool Me Once on Netflix in January 2024.

Adolescence's achievement in breaking the dominance of the traditional broadcasters at the top of the UK's weekly TV ratings will be seen as another milestone in the growth of Netflix and streaming.

I haven't seen this yet, but I have heard quite a bit of discussion about it. In particular, there's been talk of it being shown in schools - considering it covers themes that are pertinent to many students (such as incels and bullying).

Have you seen it - and if so, what did you think?

A few people recommended it to us, so watch it I did. It was well-acted and well-done considering all the precise camera movements which needed to be made in the ongoing one-camera style. Each episode hit at a different angle of the story and it did keep me watching and it kept me guessing a little, as well. I think it was the third episode, 50? minutes went by so fast, I was surprised at how much it must have sucked us in. Four episodes was about right. Keep it short with its impact.

I’ve heard that the third episode is the best and a work of art. ^

I have been meaning to watch this and I keep putting it off. I feel like it’s because I know it’s dark and I want to fully get engrossed with it. I definitely will watch it at some point. The boy actor in it hasn’t had an acting job before and got a lot of praise

Yeah, I intend to watch it at some point, although I suspect other things will end up taking priority :P .

Unfortunately, despite the success of the show itself, it seems to have done very little to influence people to use online safety tools:

A shame... I had hoped something like this could change the culture surrounding such things!
