Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho after identifying a catalogue of his failings at the club.

The Portuguese, 55, took over in May 2016 and led United to League Cup and Europa League titles, but they are 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The club have made a change after no progress with results or style despite spending nearly £400m on 11 players.

They also say the new manager will understand the philosophy of the club, including their attacking tradition.

It is understood players and staff are not happy after a disappointing and unsettling period during which young players were not developed.

Yeah, he probably had to go. His philosophy doesn't seem to be in line with the rest of the club, and all he really did was prove that throwing money at a problem isn't enough to solve it. 

I'll be interested to see who they pick to replace him.

Mourinho has lost his prime and his "Special One" tagline has worn out.

Though as an MCFC fan I want to see Man United go down, however it's sorta sad that MU has turned into mediocre at best within 5 years.

But yeah, expected, i don't like mourinho as well so there's that too.

Mourinho always seems to struggle in his third season, and his brand of football isn't exactly easy enough on the eye to keep him at clubs when the results stop coming. The amount of money he's managed to waste during his time in charge is ridiculous.

I'd like to see them give a young manager a go. Someone like Eddie Howe - would be interesting to see how he did at a big time. Looks like it might well be Solskjaer as an interim for now, though.

Well, Solskjaer has been appointed as interim coach - and he got off to a great start, which saw Man United routing Cardiff City 5-1:

It's a match they would have been expected to win anyway - but, if he wants to get the job permanently, then this is surely the way to make a case for it!
