The moose, scientifically known as Alces alces, is the largest deer putting aside extinct species such as Libralces, Megaloceros, and Cervalces. 2 meters tall at the shoulder and 700 kg make the moose earn its title as giant with males larger than females. The plural is officially moose although this guide will use meese. The word moose is an Abenaki loanword. Meese live throughout northern North America and northern Eurasia where they're conventionally called Elk in British English. If one wishes to permanently defy confusion, just say Alces alces. The males are bulls, females are cows, and younglings are calves.
Meese are herbivores that depend on pine needles, shrubbery, and aquatic plants. They can either browse from treetops or bend down to graze. They usually dip their heads in water to feed on aquatic plants or to drink but some do dive into and swim underwater to feed.
Meese live solitary lives with at most a cow and calf or several or a cow and a bull. Eight month pregnancies are the norm for cows and the calves are grown ups by about a year. The bulls rut seasonally with the larger, tougher males getting the chance to mate with females the most.
Meese are so large and powerful they are usually not threatened by predators. Wolves only have a shot at killing them in packs and prefer to hunt cows and calves. Tigers can hunt meese where they coexist. Cougars rarely attack meese but can kill them. Brown bears usually scavenge on dead meese but occasionally hunt and kill weak meese. Killer whales have opportunistically attacked and killed meese that swim between islands while Greenland sharks scavenge them. Humans hunt them too. A moose, even a cow, is a dangerous opponent with powerful hooves and immense strength and antlers(when in season for the bulls.) Because a moose can kick in any direction, there is no safe way to approach a moose. Many predators of meese prefer hunting them in snowdrifts in winter where the moose can't use its speed as well.
Meese are Least Concern conservation status. Mostly, it's trouble keeping their numbers down due to few predators able to hunt them and extirpation of their usual predators so humans do regularly hunt them.
Meese are popular and recognizable deer. It would be impossible to list all their pop cultural and documentary appearances.
