Remodelling the Board Footer, Part 2

A while back, we re-designed our board footer on the mobile themes. This is what we have now:

I think this is an improvement over what we had before. However, there are still a couple of problems with it:

  • The 'Quick Links' section is a bit cluttered. It contains six links, which have little to do with one another.
  • The 'Meet our Team' link is redundant. It just takes people to a list of the staff: this is achieved better by the 'Staff Intro' link at the top of the board.

Therefore, I propose we modify this board footer, as follows:

First of all, I got rid of the redundant 'Meet our Team' button. Secondly, I moved the 'MyBB Documentation' button to where the 'Meet our Team' button used to be, and re-named it to 'MyBB Guide' (since 'MyBB Documentation' would be too long here).

IMO, this is considerably cleaner :) . What do you guys think?

I consider "Home" somewhat repetitive too because multiple links lead to that page and most people who bookmark sites use the homepage link. If you're using "space" for a home link, you would be better off having the breadcrumb trail near the top and bottom of the page. I've seen a few sites do this and it seems to be a good move for accessibility reasons. However, even then there is a go-to top and bottom button, people can use these to jump to the top to view the breadcrumb trail and logo, which have links that both lead to the homepage. You might consider adding the title text, "Home" to the logo.

That's a good idea - but, one issue with it right now is that the breadcrumb trail isn't visible at all on mobiles. I temporarily enabled it on mobiles, to see how it would look - and, it looked fine on the index page, but, when I went several levels deep, it started to look messy.

So, if we went down this route, we'd need to start displaying the breadcrumb on mobiles (which is probably a good idea anyway), but we'd also need to redesign the breadcrumb (which would involve a fair amount of work).

To be honest, I think this would be too much work, for too little benefit. We have about 20 themes - and most of those have their own unique banner. So, we'd need to make new versions of all of those banners, with the word 'Home' on them.

IMO, it's not worth the time it'd take us to do that - but, thanks for the suggestion anyway :) .

To clarify, I was referring to the HTML title attribute.

On mobile, you could make it where only the first link appears with an arrow pointing down and the list expands into a drop-menu breadcrumb when you click the arrow. That's a random musing, it could be done a better way.

Yeah, that's easy enough :) . Indeed, I've just done it!

Yeah, something like that could work :) .

I'll look into it when I get a chance. I won't be able to do it this weekend (since Opal Fruit will be here) - but, I might look into it the weekend after that.

Thanks for the ideas!
