The calorie content of meals in UK restaurants is "excessive" and sit-down restaurants are unhealthier than fast-food chains, BMJ research suggests.
Health experts say meals should not exceed 600 calories, but in this study they averaged 1,033 in restaurants and 751 in fast-food chains.
University of Liverpool researchers analysed thousands of meals from places like Hungry Horse and McDonald's.
They said their findings were a cause for concern.
The research team looked at more than 13,500 meals on the menus of 21 sit-down restaurants and six fast-food chains.
This did sound rather surprising at first. Then again, now that I think about it, the portion sizes in restaurants are generally quite a lot bigger: those meals are designed to fill the customer up, whereas fast food is just meant to be produced and consumed quickly and cheaply.
(There are still some pretty shocking individual cases, though. In one instance, my dad ordered pasta because he assumed it would be healthier than pizza; however, he then discovered that it contained more calories than the pizza did!)
