The "Sixth Sense"

You ever had a moment in your life, where you had this sudden premonition; an urge to do something for whatever reason, only for that split second decision to somehow drastically affect the next moment?

I have two examples of this unexplainable phenomenon where this happened to me:

The first was when I was fresh out of high school, and my older brother and his friend, and I were at the community pool during the off season.

There was nary a soul present, and despite the community having a guard casually come and patrol, it was never known when he'd make his rounds to check the pool.

So as young people often do, we partake in a little trouble making, and my brother dunks the pools chairs and tables into the pool itself, much to the chagrin of his friend and I.

Moments pass, and I get this feeling of urgency, this sudden panic...

I can't explain it.

But I quickly haul and move the furniture back into place.

Before my brother can question why, the security guard turns the corner of the entrance.

Thinking we were using the pool furniture while swimming (explaining as to why they were sopping wet), he gives us a nod and goes about his rounds.

My brother's friend just chuckles at this, while my brother was dumbfounded.

"What would you do without Azriel?"

He asked my older brother.

The second instance of this happening, was on a lovely summer afternoon.

My girlfriend at the time and I were walking down an empty road, and she was walking on the street near the curb.

There was no traffic either foot or vehicle in either direction, the only thing you could hear was the rustling of the leaves on trees...

But just then in the midst of a lazy summer's day, I had this deep sense of dread again, something I can't explain; I immediately grabbed my girlfriend and hauled her next to me.

Before she could even question why I just did that, there came the screeching of tires and a wild driver speeding out of a curve in the road nearly misses us!

He sped down the road so quickly, it took longer to process what just happened.

Had I not acted in that split second, I don't even want to think about it.

So!

Has anyone else experienced that kind of premonition?

Yikes :O .

I can't say I've experienced anything like that in my personal life: I've had plenty of near misses in my life, but they were either where I acted quickly to get out of trouble when the problem was already present, or I narrowly avoided the problem through means that were out of my control. I can't recall any instances of a "sixth sense" situation in my own life (where I sensed a problem before it was present, and then took action that allowed me to avoid it).

I suppose the closest I can think of is when my dad and I went out cycling one day in winter, about 15 years ago. He was getting ready to set off without his helmet... but I insisted he put one on, and refused to go with him unless he did. So, he put his helmet on, and we set off. Then, about 10 or 15 minutes later, as we were turning a corner, he hit a patch of black ice; fell off his bike, and banged his head on the path below. Because he was wearing his helmet (thanks to me), he was perfectly fine: he just got back on his bike and continued the ride. But had he not been wearing it... well, it doesn't bear thinking about, but it would surely have been a lot worse!

One moment I always note is during uni I was going for a walk like I always did and I usually went down this one specific road. Today it looked no different and nothing odd but my gut told me to go a different way so I did. Later that night the news reported issues of mugging on that street roughly around that time I was about to go down it.

I often have a sixth sense if there are bad vibes from a person. Like when a friend introduces me to someone, sometimes I get a feeling that something is up about them and they may be two-faced even though they haven’t actually done anything directly wrong at that point.

The night before my mum died, I went home during the day from the hospital and wasn’t going to visit her again til the following day. But I had a feeling that I needed to go back so I did and stayed for 5 hours. She passed away the next morning. Although of course, common sense showed she wasn’t doing well.
