One example that amazes me is No. 34046 Braunton:
From a rusting hulk to a working steam locomotive... that must have taken an immense amount of time, money, and dedication. But I'm glad there was a team of devoted volunteers who were able to provide all three !

I looked it up, and I was able to find out that it was an 11-year project (from 1996 to 2007). I couldn't find out how much it cost, but it would almost certainly have been a six-figure sum - if not a seven-figure sum.
Part of the issue with this locomotive was that, due to its poor condition, it wasn't seen as a priority for restoration. So, many of its useful parts got taken for other restoration projects (and then, when this locomotive finally *was* restored, a lot of new parts had to be made from scratch!)
Still, I'm thankful that some people are willing to put up those crazy amounts of time and money - so that these magnificent machines can be enjoyed by future generations
