Now, a group of astronomers are claiming that Betelgeuse may, in fact, go supernova in our lifetimes:

Essentially: they've found that Betelgeuse's brightness is oscillating on two separate cycles: a 420-day cycle, and a 2,200-day cycle. It's long been thought that the 420-day cycle is the main one - but these astronomers suspect that it may, in fact, be the 2,200-day cycle. But this would only make sense if Betelgeuse was one-third wider than thought... which in turn would only make sense
It's quite an indirect and convoluted argument - but I'll be interested to see if other astronomers are going to buy into it!
