Why do many people use Discord servers, but won't join forums?
#11
Beyond the stuff already mentioned I'll throw in the fact it's convenient. With one account you can join multiple communities in seconds and be interacting with various people across several channels in seconds. On top of that you have voice and video chat, games, and other stuff as well. Convenience is a huge factor for a lot of people. Not to mention at this point Discord servers can easily be many times larger than most forums so people don't see the point of joining half dead forums if Discord servers are easy to join and have way more activity.

Doesn't some forum software have this feature where your accounts are all linked across their platform, was it maybe ProBoards and/or Tapatalk?

Proboards lets you have one Proboards account and you can speed up your ability to sign up for each Proboards supported forum. The thing is though this is still a bit more tedious process than Discord and with Discord you can have all of your communities in one spot while each forum would be a separate tab.

True - although, it's hard to see how something like that would work for a self-hosted community, like TCH.

And while pre-hosted services, like ProBoards and Tapatalk, can offer more convenience with those single sign-on users, I think there are major disadvantages (e.g. not really owning your forum's data) that outweigh the advantages!

I had an idea after this post where there could be a "forum dashboard" that shows you all forums you're registered to on a forum software and you can use a one-account sign-in to log into any of the forums. Even better if there was a tab system like Discord that would allow you to tab through the communities you're a part of. I made this feature request on Jcink and the owner says it would be a big task to complete.

I've always used non-self-hosted communities myself since I have no server-side knowledge and I'm much more acquainted with how they work and operate. I understand the big disadvantage of not necessarily owning your forum's data, however.

I've actually never been one for group chats. I think Discord is quite good for people who like to play videogames in groups as it can be neat and tidy in servers in real-time. They're also accessible on devices and have videocall.

I am part of a few servers but I don't really read them. I feel like I miss out on too much chat as I like to dip in and out and prefer no voice chat while playing.

Guess I’m the weirdo because forums are better and I barely can make heads or toes of this app named after Equestria’s God of Chaos.
Besides, forums are easier to do vs battles on.

There are a lot of reasons for this I think. One being that Discord is just a lot more convenient. With forums, I have to go between several websites to check for messages from different groups. On Discord, however, all the groups, friends, and communities are in one place, and it shows me notifications from all of them. Plus, it's easier to find communities on discord (you can literally just look them up), whereas all the forums I know of come from people on other forums, or they came up by chance. Additionally, Discord functions as a messaging app, and it's my main source of communication with most of my friends and siblings.

I think Discord just has a lot broader usage than forums, and I do prefer Discord.
Hail the otters.
