A Minecraft Movie (2025)

Move over, Detective Pikachu, there’s an even stranger live-action video game movie on the way. And by that, I mean Warner Bros. just released the first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie. The film features actual humans and a slightly realistic CG take on Minecraft. But when you mix the game’s iconic blocky style with real life, you get, well, this.

Unsettling imagery aside, A Minecraft Movie looks like some silly family fun, with lots of one-liners, large-scale battles, and Jack Black exclaiming “I am Steve!” very proudly. And obviously, there’s both mining and crafting. Aside from Black, the movie also stars Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. It’s directed by Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame and is hitting theaters in North America on April 4th.

I've got to be honest: I'm really not a fan of what I'm seeing here. It can't seem to decide whether it's trying to be realistic, or trying to capture the charm of Minecraft's blocky art style. So it ends up falling awkwardly in the middle - as a mish-mash of those two wildly different art styles.

Anyway, were you any more enamoured with this than I was?

As I mentioned elsewhere this doesn't look good and when your trailer isn't impressive that's a huge sign.

Indeed - especially when the flaw is "the overall look and feel of the film". That's not something that can easily be fixed!

(Yes, I know the Sonic movie changed his appearance after the negative response to the initial trailer, and that worked out for them - but, that was only one character. This looks the same, multiplied by a hundred  !)

I had put down the Lego Movie before, and had my mouth screwed shut by it.

But this doesn't look good...

Minecraft has one of the most distinctive visual styles in all of gaming. It’s absurd to toss that all out the window for the movie.

My Opinion:
I actually believe that it is going to be a good movie. I feel like they did make the look of the world as it should be. I also think that they just haven't really revealed the whole movie yet. Let me explain.

I think that they are going to release more content in trailer's that I believe will reveal popular minecraft creatures such as The Wither, The Endermen and other Ender creatures; and maybe even Guardians and what went along with them. I think the movie will look so much cooler to everyone once they see these characters in the movie.

I also appreciate how they have actual real-life actors for the players of the game. It really makes the movie less cringe in a sense(peer opinion of your likes and dislikes is a big thing nowadays).

I think the fact they have Steve in a sense look like a old person who's been there for millennia(which would fit because technically Steve has been in Minecraft ever since it was born.

I also hope they add Pillagers and everything that is relating to their update. Like this if you want to see the Ender monsters come into the movie.

I kind of wish the people were also CGI but I like the look of the cast. Enid from Wednesday and Tastyee from OITNB. I'll watch this regardless and the references will be cool to see. :)

I agree. Not sure why movies are being made from video games. A Minecraft movie just seems odd.. there isn't really a story, it's up in the air really. Unless you want to dig into the lore.

He will become the 48th President by promising to release TES VI someday and only do one Skyrim re-release a year instead of a dozen

I think the movie should've just been fully animated from the start. Instead it's got two wildly different art styles that just look a mess when combined together.

In this video, YouTube user 'The Renaissance' argues that this film is much worse than 'Ugly Sonic' - in that the ugly art style is the least of its problems:

  • The story doesn't fit: Like Nilla said, Minecraft doesn't really have a story: the players create their own stories. Of course, there is story-driven media set in the Minecraft universe that has worked (for example, Minecraft: Story Mode) - but, that's not what this is. It's not even a Minecraft story: it uses Minecraft to tell the story, but could use any other game, and it would still work just as well.

  • It doesn't respect the source material: Minecraft doesn't try to be real, but it does try to be immersive: the player is supposed to be able to lose themselves in their own world. However, that's not what happens to the characters in this film: instead, the Minecraft universe is presented as some kind of alternate dimension, which the characters are constantly aware is fake!

One of the commenters on this video pointed out that they could have learned a lot from The LEGO Movie. After all, it's a very similar situation: LEGO has no story; instead, the people playing with it create their own stories. But they did still manage to tell a compelling story within that universe. Sadly, this Minecraft film just isn't doing that :( .
