A while back, I started a thread about a dispute between two neighbours: Dave was playing loud music, and Lucy reported him to the building management without talking to him first. In that thread, the consensus was that Lucy was most at fault.
So here, Lucy tries to make amends. By way of apology to Dave, she offers to pay for the group's takeaway the following weekend. And to make it an extra special event, she offers to get it from Brian's fancy restaurant, instead of the cheap fast food outlet that they usually get it from. And, knowing that Dave can be particular about his food, she wisely allows him to do the order, to prevent any possibility of mix-ups on her end. After a few minutes, the order is sent; Lucy hands over the money; and the two of them wait for their delicious food to arrive.
Unfortunately, when they unpack the food, they find that Dave's steak soufflé (that he had particularly been looking forward to) was missing. Instead, there is a snake soufflé, which Brian had recently introduced as a limited edition item - and which had proven to be a surprise hit with his regular customers. However, Dave has never eaten snake in his life - and, he's disgusted by the idea. Lucy encourages him to give it a go anyway - and, reluctantly, he agrees... but, sure enough, he finds it tastes horrible, and refuses to eat any more.
Immediately after throwing away the rest of the snake soufflé, Dave gets on the phone to Brian, and demands a steak soufflé be sent to him immediately, free of charge. However, Brian refuses to accept responsibility for the mix-up: he had heard "snake soufflé" on the phone, and asked Dave to confirm that this was what he wanted. Dave had confirmed it; however, this was only because he misheard "snake soufflé" as "steak soufflé" over the phone (and, not being a regular customer, he had no idea that these snake soufflés existed until one was delivered to him).
Dave then repeated his demand for a steak soufflé to be sent immediately. However, Brian refused - instead offering a 20% discount on their next order. Dave explained that this would be useless to him: he wasn't a regular customer, and this order was a one-time thing. However, Brian refused to relent - so, in the end, Dave swore at him, and angrily threw the phone down. By now, he was fuming, and on the verge of tears - while Lucy was awkwardly sat there, feeling depressed that her attempt to help out had gone so wrong.
So, who was more at fault here? Was it Brian for not making more effort to distinguish two easily-confused products, and for not doing more to correct the mistake when it happened? Or was it Dave's fault for being too demanding and losing his cool in that manner? (And, if anyone wants a bonus question: is there anything more that Lucy can do to help resolve matters?)
